Non-surgical therapy against bruxism
Bruxism – the grinding of teeth or the clenching of the upper and lower jaws – often occurs at night. A common cause of bruxism is stress. The psychological tension is often processed during sleep, which leads to the affected persons pressing their jaws together more firmly or rubbing their teeth together. One therapy option is the teeth grinding treatment with Botox® in Hamburg. With the help of the botulinum toxin (Botox®), the jaw muscles can relax. Botox® against teeth grinding is performed without a surgical intervention by injecting it into the appropriate places under the skin. It is therefore a relatively gentle and low-risk treatment method against bruxism.
Reasons for a teeth grinding treatment in Hamburg
The clenching or grinding of the teeth is one of the so-called parafunctions of the masticatory system. These are movements that do not serve any actual purpose (such as grinding food). Bruxism usually occurs unconsciously and often focuses on the time when the affected person is sleeping. But even during the day, especially in stressful situations, people may press the upper and lower jaws strongly together or grind their teeth.
In the long run, bruxism can cause damage to the tooth substance. Besides toothache, the following other complaints can occur:
- painful tension of the facial muscles
- Pain in the temporomandibular joint
- pain and tension in the neck and shoulders
- Headaches
- Earache
- Ear noises (tinnitus)
- Swindle
In order to reduce these complaints without the need for an operation, a teeth grinding treatment with Botox® is recommended.
Consultation and treatment of teeth grinding with Botox®.
The basis for an individual treatment of bruxism is a detailed doctor-patient consultation. After you have described your complaints and expectations to the expert, Mr. Tuguntke will examine you and then explain the medical options. Of course, the experienced doctor, who specialises in non-surgical treatments, will also answer your specific questions about teeth grinding treatment with Botox®.
How do I stop grinding my teeth after Botox ®?
When injecting Botox® against teeth grinding, it is crucial to apply the active ingredient in the right places. If an inexperienced doctor makes the wrong injection, the function of the salivary gland, for example, can be impaired. In advance, Mr. Tuguntke will mark the treatment points exactly on your face. Teeth grinding treatment with Botox® is usually not painful. Many patients report a slight pressure, some a burning sensation. The bruxism treatment can be done without anaesthesia. However, it is also possible to apply a local anaesthetic cream.
After the doctor has injected the botulinum toxin into the jaw or masticatory muscle, you can leave our practice after a short recovery period. The effect of Botox® unfolds gradually over the following weeks. The active ingredient inhibits the transmission of stimuli from the nerve to the muscle, so that the muscle does not tense up as much and the jaw loosens. The chewing function is not restricted by the teeth grinding treatment with Botox®, as the muscle is not completely paralysed.
Advantages of teeth grinding treatment with Botox®
- Non-surgical, outpatient treatment
- Short treatment duration
- No anaesthesia (local anaesthetic if necessary)
- Low pain and low risk
- Absorbable active ingredient
- None / very little downtime
- Comparatively low costs
- Direct treatment of the causes (e.g. in comparison to the bite splint, which only protects against tooth damage)
How much is Botox® for teeth grinding?
Just as with wrinkle treatment, the exact procedure for bruxism therapy is adapted to the patient. The costs for the teeth grinding treatment in Hamburg thus depend on the respective findings and the desired result. Among other things, the number of injections and the amount of active substances as well as the possible local anaesthesia determine the price range. Therefore, we cannot make any concrete statements about the expected costs of the teeth grinding treatment with Botox® in advance. However, we will be happy to give you a more detailed estimate during the detailed free consultation.
What is Botox®?
Botox® is a brand name for a preparation with the active ingredient botulinum toxin, which has become established in general language use. Other well-known names include Xeomin® or Azzalure®. Botulinum toxin in itself is a strong nerve poison, which in the past was associated with botulism (the “meat poisoning”), among other things. Nowadays there are hardly any cases of botulism in this country.
Is Botox® safe?
Botox® has been used in medicine since the early 1970s. Initially, doctors mainly treated strabismus and neurological movement disorders with botulinum toxin. A little later, Botox® was also used to reduce wrinkles, to treat heavy sweating (hyperhidrosis), to treat migraines and headaches and to treat bruxism.
Possible causes of bruxism
- Stress
- Fear
- Dental/jaw diseases
- An ill-fitting dental prosthesis (e.g. bridge, denture)
- An ill-fitting filling
- Craniomandibular dysfunction (short: CMD, functional disorder of the temporomandibular joint)
- Medication intake
Possible risk factors for bruxism
- Insomnia
- Chronic stress
- Chronic anxiety
- Consumption of alcohol or nicotine
- Caffeine consumption
How long does Botox for teeth grinding last?
The effect of botulinum toxin unfolds gradually. In wrinkle treatment, the effect of the active ingredient reaches its peak after about ten days. In the case of teeth grinding treatment, the first results are also seen after a few days. The full effect occurs after about three weeks, as the jaw muscles are thicker. Botulinum toxin is broken down again by the human body. This also reduces the effect of the treatment. The effect of Botox® against bruxism lasts on average six to twelve months. The treatment can be repeated for a lasting result. If botulinum toxin is injected regularly, the duration of the effect can also be increased.
What can I not do after masseter Botox?
As a rule, you can socialise immediately after the teeth grinding treatment with Botox® and go out without any major restrictions. You should avoid sporting activities for about two days. If the treatment area is swollen or burning, you can support the healing process by cooling. Make sure not to use cooling pads that are too cold. It is best to put the cooling pad in a towel or to place a damp, cool cloth on the face area.
When should a bruxism treatment not be carried out?
Treatment with Botox® for teeth grinding is contraindicated if you are allergic to the active ingredient. In case of doubt, the tolerance can be tested beforehand. Furthermore, the treatment should not be carried out if:
- you are pregnant,
- They breastfeed,
- you are a minor,
- there are injuries or inflammations in the area to be treated
- certain diseases are present (e.g. neuromuscular diseases).
- Further areas of application of medical botulinum toxin
- In our practice we also use medical botulinum toxin for the treatment of migraine and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
- Botox® is also used in medicine to help patients who squint, suffer from neurological movement disorders (e.g. spasticity) or are affected by bladder problems.
Is Botox for Bruxism safe?
The injection of botulinum toxin is one of the so-called gentle therapies, as it is carried out without surgery. However, in order to ensure that the treatment is as uncomplicated as possible, it is essential to have a precise knowledge of the exact procedure and the anatomy of the nerves and muscles of the face. Even if only small amounts of the active ingredient are injected during the teeth grinding treatment with Botox®, a faulty injection can lead to functional restrictions and temporary paralysis. As we are specialised in the treatment with Botox® in our practice, the risk of serious complications is very low. Normal and usually harmless side effects may include redness, swelling and haematomas. They usually subside within a few days. Any numbness or itching will also subside after a short time.
